2024 Neurographic Art Thread, Surprises In Neurographic Art And How I Felt About It, Angela Davies, Moderator

Neurographic art starts off as an intuitive scribble at the edge of your paper and flows out to the edge and off your paper or medium. When lines intersect, round and thicken at the intersection until no sharp intersections remain. Many of these patterns can be seen in nature i.e. brain neurons, tree roots, etc. which inspired the name of this relatively new art form created by Pavel Piskarev in 2014. Many tutorials are now available on YouTube if you want to learn more of this technique. When working on a neurographic drawing, ideally, we should be in a state of relaxation and allow our pen, pencil, or brush to do the work for us, musing about what may be concerning us at the time. When finished, you may see one or more images appear which can be further developed and enhanced. You may also feel a sense of surprise in what appears. This thread is a place to share your neurographic art surprises and how you felt about them.

NOTE: To share an image in this thread please use the URL code at the top of the page of your image, not the embed code. After posting an image URL in discussion you cannot go back to edit it, as it will make the image link go dead. Instead, just make a new post.

Feeling Hoppy was created as I was daydreaming about spring. As I finished the drawing,I could definitely see petals and leaves appearing and enhanced the interior of the shapes with some zentangling and color. But the real surprise, was when I noticed a little green frog in the image staring out at me. Such a fun moment!

Thanks so much for all your shares above and the descriptions of their meanings. Wonderful examples of neurographic art and how we can express meaning, emotion, and thoughts within these spontaneous drawings.

Dear Angela, It is with GREAT EXCITEMENT that I post this gratitude here in the BUZzz…in the HEALing thread…18 months later from my rendering on my husband’s end stage cancer diagnosis: As of his PET scan reading today (synchronistically, the anniversary of his mom’s passing and my mom’s 98th birthday) , he is in FULL REMISSION in his bladder and all metastatic sites! …thank you everyone for healing and wellness intentions! I/we both believe in the Power of prayerful intention. His immunotherapy is working!

Wow Laurel, both the original drawing and the digitally enhanced work are gorgeous! I think your more "aggressive" digital enhancements really worked with this drawing to create an exciting new work, both are so full of energy and vibrancy! Thanks for sharing!!!

Here’s another recent Neurographic rendering for the recent Menopause contest that became so much more than I anticipated. Talk about some latent emotions which surfaced…always an adventure in healing with this amazing technique. Thank you so much for introducing me to it.

Just went over to leave a comment Laurel, wow, you need to serve on a committee in congress to address this subject, a very well informed description of just some of the many, many issues regarding this topic. Sadly, almost all drugs have or were only tested on male subjects, so many are not adequate to the body chemistry of women. It is a complicated subject, so much so, that it seems our male medical counterparts just threw up their hands in despair and went their merry way with a pat on the hand and the usual pain relief drugs, and it's, "all in your head, sweetheart." I have to say I could do a drawing of joy if addressing menopause because it was the first time in my life that I was free of miserable pain and all the other issues women endure in silence on a monthly basis most of their lives. Menopause was nothing compared to the monthly pain I lived with for an eternity it seemed. Thankfully, at menopause, I had no hot flashes, or any of the other problems associated with it. Needed no meds, felt wonderful. But I paid the price in earlier life. Thanks for sharing your art and thoughts on this important subject.

lol…dear Angela, I rarely speak about my pre-artistic career…nay, nay. I’ve walked enough red tape in my day to last a lifetime, thank you…however, I appreciate the thought.

I will soon be uploading a few neurographic pieces I found during tonight’s search for this year’s Donation to one of my favorite wildlife fundraisers. For now…sleep calls.

Dear Angela,
The mixed media, activated water colour AND colour pencil activated Neurographic Rendering was turned by digital tool magic and digital transition into my FIRST NEUROGRAPHIC ART COLLAGE! I know, …Whaaat?

Thank you Laurel! I will do. I did a few digital ones last night. It is extremely therapeutic! They turned out a bit cartoony which is not my usual style, but I will post them anyway and would love to see what you both think. The first one I made was completely different to anything I have ever done before and actually made me laugh because I thought it would go in a more floral direction haha but no.

Angela, I agree with Laurel because I actually went looking for this collection on your page. It didn't occur to me to suggest it to you so good call Laurel!

Thanks for the suggestion Leufia and Laurel! I did at one time have my neurographic art in a collection but for some reason deleted it during the holidays I think??? Not sure why, but will repost it. I have not been doing much neurographic work lately but really need to start again as it helps with Artists Block, also, which I have a nasty case of right now! :) Looking forward to seeing your new work Leufia!

I've just posted one of the 5 neurotrophic artworks I did last night! https://fineartamerica.com/featured/colorful-abstract-neurographic-stained-glass-effect-leufia.html?newartwork=true

I don't normally do that many at once but as you said, it is very therapeutic and relaxing so I got really into it. I gave you a little shout out Angela and would just like to thank you again because I have created 5 completely different pieces, which are also different to any artwork I've created before. Thank you also Laurel for the motivation and encouragement and recommending this thread to me.

That one isn't the one that made me laugh, I will post that now.

Thanks for adding your two new works to discussion Leufia! I went over and left comments on both. The stained glass effects one that you posted first reminds me of a garden of brightly colored tulips, quite striking, and the second one made me smile also. I see a pouty pooch with his head turned sideways. Such fun isn't it. Keep going! :)

Thank you so much again Angela! It's so interesting because you and the other kind person that commented see differently to what I see. I will wait till Laurel has a look before telling you what I see. I will do. I am posting the last ones now. I will share them together once I've done so.

WOW! Leufia…you’ve got the Neurographic bug! Exciting, yes?
Neurographic art is a technique with criteria and you’ve got the offside lines down. The second element is neuron development and that requires softening of the angles at the interstices of where the lines intersect. Also the third element is to take a focused emotion or thought into the process.
I see you have also joined my Neurographic Art Group! YAY! In the Neurographic Art group, the membership is also required to add an acknowledgement statement to developer, Pavel Piskarev who has recently trademarked his technique and training process….see the group homepage.
Below is the link to my neurographic Art group which gives a researched overview and definition. Hope it helps. There you can see how differently many of us interpret the three simple criteria. Any of the abstracts you have included in this thread will easily become “Neurographic Art “ with the modification of neuron development! Your work is, like most neurographic work…authentic, beautifully bold and Interpretive! Keep your excitement FLOWing and keep PLAYing! I can’t WAIT to see your final take(s) on this artform!

https://fineartamerica.com/groups/neurographic-art.html?tab=overview

You can also see the originator, Pavel Piskarev on utube with his MANY detailed tutorials. I watched several before I attempted…then, I developed my own “style” and began RelaxIng into the technique.

Thank you so so much Laurel! I will definitely look more into this and take on board your tips! Very useful and YES, definitely got the bug hehe. Looking forward to experimenting more with this method! That is good to know about referencing Pavel Piskarev. I will go and do that now and looking forward to watching videos on this also!

An extra MASSIVE thank you for taking the time to view, comment on and share my artworks - and for your detailed and lengthy messages and emails. I really appreciate it so much! So kind and motivating!

P.s It is so interesting that I cannot see what other people see and vice versa. I see a side profile of a bear on the left (with a green ear) and on the right, a side profile of a woman with a blue face, red cheek and black hair. This is what I expected most people to see to but no one so far. Fun!

Leufia, I am SOooo excited to see your enthusiasm for this technique which is an amazing conduit for so much…anxiety release, healing, simply fun of creating, and a wonderful assist for artist block. Intershare within your talent and enthusiasm is what fuels each of us moderators in the BUZzz and hopefully, we are successful in returning the gaze to the beauty of your work and to the affirmation of your aesthetic. Thanks for sharing in the BUZzz!

Thanks so much for sharing your newest works Leufia! You are on a roll! Doing this type of art seems to open the floodgates of creativity! Glad you are enjoying the process. I recently clicked on your links above but they did not take me to the works? Not sure if it a site glitch or what?

Leufia Rea

You're welcome Angela! I changed the names because Laurel pointed out to me that they are leaning more towards line art than neurographic art, so I think that's why the link doesn't work. I've since watched a couple videos and played about more. What I created last night is very abstract but I think more in the right direction with the rounding of the edges creating a neuron effect (that makes sense now hahaa) and it was very relaxing to do. I will post that soon :)

Thank you both again! I enjoy experimenting and getting tips and tricks!

It's very basic but I quite like how it looks on certain products.

Enjoy the trip to Scotland, I envy you, one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited!!! I went over and left a comment on your work.

Laurel Adams

Yes!, you are strengthening the Neurographic Flow. One can FEEL and FOLLOW the offside lines and the cluster of pebbles as the Neuron in the primary intersection. I understand your love of tangles, colour and design. It is a …delicate dance…to balance the tipping point of losing the Neurographic elements to overall design. I removed many of my own early works because I couldn’t …resist the temptation. I now save three phases of my neurographic work and often post the mid and final phases in different categories of Neurographic and Nature abstract. I will accept this beauty and post examples of my own work as examples of where I surrendered to the Muse and buried the neurographic underpinnings.

When you think of it, virtually everything in nature is neurographic in origin. Think of fractals and their neurographic origins, veins of sea waves, rivulets of water flowing down rocky pathways of alpine streams, tree branches and leaf patterns…the list goes on and on.

I posted the url for your beautiful work just now featured in the Artist BUZzz! Congratulations!

Removed because I overworked it and lost the neurographic criteria TECHNIQUE beneath the love of burnishing the final colour pencil “painting”.

https://fineartamerica.com/featured/for-ever-autumn-laurel-adams.html

Restored by dropping the leaf onto a digital canvas in Procreate for iPad and re-drawing the neurographic elements with the Luminance Light pen tool.

Leufia congrats on recent feature in Neurographic Art! Laurel, thanks for sharing your works as examples of neurographic art and how it can be changed so that it does not meet the criteria, as you said" a fine line" between the two. :) And how it can be restored to neurographic art using your digital tools to redraw them.

Dear Angela,

I’m posting this neurographic art rendering to show how the criteria of Pavel Piskarev’s technique really works to unravel DEEP emotion and most often takes on an abstract quality with exaggerated neural and multilinear expression.

https://fineartamerica.com/featured/when-there-are-no-words-laurel-adams.html

It takes on such a different FEEL when one takes a focused “theme” into the technique. For me, it most often becomes a recognizable artwork and I REALLY must be aware so as not to overwork and even Lose the neurographic elements. This one skirted the boundaries but I couldn’t help it. Who doesn’t love the topic of Gaia?

Laurel the title, When There Are No Words, fits the emotion and mood of this complex work, thanks so much for sharing your amazing backstory with this work. The mountains in the background show the heights of emotion you experienced at this major life event. I also love the Archetypal Gaia image posted next, a sense of joy and inspiration, thanks so much for sharing in your description how this was created.
